Part 5 of 5 · The Hiring Paradox
Fixing the hiring paradox: a playbook for hiring leaders.

This week we looked at why employers can’t find talent while talented people can’t get hired: job posts that describe unicorns, screening that rejects people nobody ever reads, and filters that value pedigree over skills.
Two more forces make it harder. In Monster’s 2026 survey, 52% of employers say keeping existing staff is their top workforce priority, ahead of hiring, and 54% say return-to-office mandates have made hiring harder.
Here’s what hiring leaders can change now:
- Rewrite the post. Five real must-haves, the outcomes you need, a pay range and an honest location policy.
- Read the rejects. Audit who your screening process turned away.
- Answer every candidate. Silence costs you reputation with people who may be customers, referrers or future hires.
- Interview for judgment. Use a real scenario from the job, not a trivia quiz.
- Decide fast. Aim for a decision within two weeks of the final interview. The best candidates don’t wait.
- Look inside first. If retention is the priority, promote and develop before you post outside.
Talent isn’t missing. Much of it is getting lost in the process. Fix the process, and the paradox starts to disappear.
That’s the wrap for this week’s series. Next week: Why Service Got Worse, on why customer service problems just hit a record high.
